DIY Playdough Recipe (Gluten Free)

This playdough recipe is something I’ve been wanting to try for a while and finally got the chance. We all know and love the big- name stuff, but let’s face it, kids tend to put it in their mouth at some point and for kids who have food allergies/ sensitivities this can be a problem (did you know Playdough has gluten in it?).

So when I made my own, I not only wanted to see how it compared to the store- bought stuff, I wanted to try a gluten- free version. It was fun and simple to make and would be a great birthday party activity or party favour to send the kids home with. See the how- to below.

Gluten Free Playdough Recipe

You’ll need:

1/2 cup gluten- free flour (rice flour is good for this)

1/2 cup corn starch

1/2 cup salt

2 tsp cream of tartar

1 cup water

1 tsp cooking oil

food colouring (I’ve seen different versions that use Koolaid or you can try using fruit & veggie dyes for a natural version)

  1. In a bowl mix all ingredients together until the dough is smooth and a consistent texture. If you have to add a little extra flour or water to reach the desired consistency that’s ok.
  2. Remove your dough from the bowl and roll by hand into a long log
  3. Divide equally (I made 6 colours so divided my log into 6 balls
  4. Using your thumb, create an indent in the ball and squeeze a few drops of food colouring into the centre (add more as needed to reach the desired vibrancy)
  5. Roll the dough until the food colouring has been evenly distributed and repeat until you’ve made all of the colours
  6. Store in an air- tight container when not in use (for long- lasting dough, store each colour in it’s own ziploc bag and store in an airtight bag or container).
